Education, support, and assessment

BMS CareConnex™ Prenatal Wellness module is designed to educate expectant mothers about their pregnancy, provide support and clinical guidance during the pregnancy, and also assess each pregnancy with regard to potential medium or high risk status.

Risk stratification for targeted intervention

A complicated or premature birth is devastating to the member, their family, and your health plan. The BMS CareConnex™ clinical staff will assess each pregnancy for placement into moderate or high-risk status. For medium and high-risk pregnancies, we will interact with the member and her obstetrician to ensure the appropriate delivery of health care services. In addition, we will educate the expecting mother regarding her complicating condition and review any lifestyle changes that may be necessary to reduce the risks associated with her pregnancy.

Automatic enrollment

Enrollment into the Prenatal Wellness program is automatic for any expectant mother covered by plans electing the BMS CareConnex™ Prenatal Wellness module.

Expanded program for potentially covered

An Expanded Prenatal Wellness program is also available and elected at the plan or client level. The Expanded program extends benefits not only to covered members, but to potentially covered expectant mothers as well. The birth of a newborn is considered a “qualifying event” under most plans, allowing the mother and baby, and the associated claim costs, to be added to the plan. The Expanded Prenatal Wellness program offers a method of mitigating the risks associated with the “open door” provided by the HIPAA Special Enrollment guidelines and/or IRS Section 125 regulations.

Pregnancy facts and statistics

  • About 40% of pregnancies experience some type of complication.
  • About 15% of pregnancies experience a complication that could become life threatening to the mother and/or the unborn child.
  • The primary cause of infant death and/or disability is low birth weight, which is often due to poor prenatal care.
  • Infants with low birth weight are 40 times more likely to die during the first month of life, and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from a lifelong handicap or physical disability.
  • Gestational diabetes and pregnancy-induced hypertension are common complications that can be controlled with proper medical intervention.
